Racquel's Introduction

Hello Everyone! My name is Racquel Blancaflor.  I was born in San Diego, California. I am the oldest of three sisters.  I have been married for 4 years and have two beautiful daughters. They constantly crack me up.  I pretty much spent my elementary years of school in Schweinfurt, Germany. My dad was in the Army and was stationed there.  I lived there for 10 years.  I totally regret not learning the language.  The only German I do know is how to count from 1 to 10.  However, my family and I was able to travel around Europe before we moved to the States.  I was able to see Rome, Holland, Belgium, Czechoslovakia and other smaller parts of Germany.  I do plan on going back for vacation with my own family in the near future.  I then spent my middle school years in Fort Hood, Texas.  I hated it there.  Especially the summers because of all the bugs and that terrible heat. I spent my entire high school years at Morse High in San Diego.  It was nice moving to San Diego.  Plus my dad's side of the family all live here.  I graduated high school in 1998 and went straight to San Diego State Univseristy.  I earned my BA in Public Administration in 2002.  Now I am back in school preparing to get my Masters in Communicative Disorders at San Marcos Univserity.  I am a little bit nervous because it has been 8 years since I had to do homework.  I am praying I will survive =).

When it comes to technology I am absolutely clueless.  With computers, I only know how to do the basics.  Surfing the net, emailing, printing, saving, etc.  My husband got me a Droid phone, the Evo, when it first came out.  I don't even know how to use all the features.  I just use it to talk, taking pictures and videos of the kids, texting, checking email and shopping online.  I don't even know how to download music.  My husband really wants a MAC.  I tried using it and it is so complicated.  If we do purchase one, I will definitely sign up for those tutorial classes.  I am a visual learner.  When it comes to those social network sites, I don't have a facebook account or twitter.  My friends and family keeps bugging me to make one.  They are all addicted to that Farmville game.  Even my husband.  I am really excited about this Education 422 class.  I have already learned so cool stuff on the MAC.  I hope by the end of this semester I would be more computer savvy.

The one part that speaks out to me in the College of Education Mission Statement is "life-long learning." It feels really good being back in school after all these years.  It is nice to know that the education I will be receiving is so diverse that when I graduate I can fully apply what I have learned in the real world and throughout my life.  I also love the fact that there is so many and new ongoing services for students to help prepare us to be more educated in our future aspirations.  It is nice to know that San Marcos University is very committed in providing students the very best.

  1. Hi Racquel!
I can totally sympathize with not being the most savvy person when it comes to phones! My boyfriend has a Droid phone and I have issues finding out how to even make a phone call on the thing! Living in Germany must have been quit an experience for your family, it is too bad you didn't learn the language while you lived there but hey that's what Rosetta Stone is for right? well I enjoyed reading your intro! Ill see you in class!- Kaytlin

  2. Hi Racquel! I am also in school at CSUSM for their Masters Program in Communicative Disorders, but this is my third year here trying to complete my bachelors. How did you hear about the program? Good luck coming back to school after 8 years. That has to take a lot of courage, I would be terrified. I think that you are a great example of CSUSM's mission statement and "life-long learning". I look forward to getting to know you, I am sure we will have more classes together in the near future. Good luck this semester!

  3. Hi Racquel! I really enjoyed reading about your childhood and living in Germany. What an experience, those are good stories that I'm sure your children will really appreciate one day. I agree with you as far as the technology goes. I do not have a facebook nor a twitter account and I deal with the constant nagging from friends and family on how I need to get an account. I just use my phone for the basics and same with my computer. I am looking forward to reading more of your blog posts as the semester goes on!

  4. Hey Racquel! How cool that you spent time in Europe as a kid. And as much of a bummer as it was to live in Texas, I'm sure it made you appreciate beautiful San Diego that much more! I'm glad to meet another person who is pursuing the MA in Communicative Sciences and Disorders. I think there are several of us in this class, so it will be fun to follow each other into the cohort next year. (By any chance are you in the Physics class this semester, too?) I know you'll do great, so don't stress about homework or being back in school. And if you need any help with technology, just holler! I'm not bad so I can help if needed (or we can find someone who can help us both!). See you around!

  5. Racquel,
It's very interesting that you have been able to travel Europe, I think the only country I've gone to outside the U.S. is Mexico, but its great you got a taste of different places. How did you like your experiences in Europe?
... I also agree with you that there is so many services now for educators to prepare us for our teachings, which is great!
Good luck with you this semester!

  6. Hi Racquel,

That is great you have had the chance to travel. When I was a baby I was able to go to Germany & Kentucky, but I do not remember anything:( We can relate very well, I myself have two children, a boy(2) and a girl (5), they keep my life busy. I too am not very computer smart, I know how to do the basics and that is it. Talk to you later:)

  7. Hello.
I could relate to a lot of your life experiences. I grew up in Europe, living in Scotland and England. I love that I was able to learn different cultures. Although it was very challenging to move around, I think it's helped me grow. I am also taking this class for the Masters program. I'm still working on my Bachelors, but wanted to complete the prereqs before I graduate. So maybe I'll see you around in the other classes. Good luck :)

  8. Hey Racquel,
Sounds like you've been and lived in some really cool places. As for technology, I am right there with you. This class has already helped me so much. Congrats on your decision to come back to school to get your Masters. I am also taking pre-req's to get into the same program. We can do it girl!
